About Kathy Carruthers,

DSW, LMSW, CAADC, BCN

Founder, Therapist, and Advocate for Whole-Person Healing

Meet Kathy

You don’t have to have it all figured out to start healing.

That belief guides everything I do at Carruthers Therapy. Healing begins with connection –  real conversations, a safe space to ask hard questions, and the understanding that life’s challenges are rarely neat or predictable.

As a licensed clinical social worker with a Doctorate of Social Work, I combine the warmth of relational psychotherapy with the science of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Neurofeedback. This integrative approach works with your mind, body, and brain to create meaningful, lasting change.

Education

    • Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) – Walden University
    • Master of Social Work (MSW) – Grand Valley State University

 Certifications

    • Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC)

    • Board Certified in Neurofeedback – Performance (BCN-P)

    • EMDR

    • Extensive experience in outpatient mental health, addiction, and trauma

Before opening Carruthers Therapy, I worked in community mental health and specialized addiction medicine programs. Those years gave me a deep appreciation for the resilience people carry and the importance of tailoring therapy to each individual’s story.

My Approach

Every client’s needs are unique. Some sessions focus on conversation and reflection, while others integrate neuroscience-backed methods to help the nervous system find balance and relief.

I use:

  • Psychotherapy to explore challenges and build insight

  • EMDR to help reprocess painful or stuck memories

  • Neurofeedback to train the brain toward greater stability, focus, and emotional regulation

My goal is to meet you exactly where you are — with compassion, grounded expertise, and tools designed for real-life change.

Outside the Office

When I’m not in session, you can often find me camping under the Michigan sky, enjoying time with my family, or simply appreciating a quiet evening. I believe the best conversations often happen in relaxed, comfortable spaces — and I aim to bring that same sense of ease and openness into the therapy room.

Carruthers Therapy is your space to:

  • Come exactly as you are
  • Explore without judgment or pressure
  • Do the messy, meaningful work of healing
